Sandless Hardwood Refinishing — A Complete Guide (NJ, NY & PA)

    2026-07-05 Elevate Flooring LLC

Sandless hardwood refinishing (sometimes called dustless or no-sand refinishing) is a fast, low-mess way to restore the shine of hardwood floors without stripping them down to bare wood. Instead of sanding off the old finish, we lightly abrade the existing top coat and bond a new layer of finish directly on top — so your floors look freshly finished in a single day, with almost no dust.

How it works: our crew deep-cleans the floor, buffs the existing finish with a fine-grit screen to open it up, then rolls on one or two coats of premium water-based polyurethane. Most rooms are walkable within hours and fully cured within a few days — no plastic sheeting, no evacuating the house, no lingering odors.

Sandless vs. traditional sanding — when each one wins: choose sandless refinishing when your floors are dull, lightly scratched or losing their sheen but the wood itself is sound. Choose a full sand-and-refinish when floors have deep gouges, gray or black water stains, cupping, or when you want to change the stain color. Sandless can't remove damage that lives inside the wood — only a full sanding reaches bare wood for a color change or deep repair.

Benefits homeowners love: no dust clouds through the house, no shutting down the kitchen for days, pet- and kid-friendly turnaround, and typically 30–50% less cost than a full sand-and-refinish. Businesses love it too — offices, retail stores and restaurants can be refinished overnight and reopen the next morning.

What it costs: sandless refinishing typically runs a fraction of full refinishing because there's no aggressive sanding, no re-staining and no long cure time. Every home is different — square footage, existing finish type and floor condition all affect price — so we always quote after a free in-person walkthrough.

Is your floor a good candidate? Sandless works best on hardwood with an intact polyurethane finish and no wax buildup. If you've ever mopped with oil soap or applied a wax polish, the new finish won't bond properly — we'll test a small area first to make sure it's a fit.
